Dr Grainne Ketelaar
International Women's Day 2020: Dr Grainne Ketelaar, Lecturer in the Dept of Nursing & Health Studies, LYIT
Dr Ketelaar is working collaboratively with Paula Leonard, the National Lead Community Action on Alcohol, Alcohol Forum, on a project to gain insight into the perspectives of young people around the large scale teenage discos which have become a prominent feature in Irish society in recent years. The qualitative research aims to better understand young people’s views and experiences of what is safe and what is not in the lead up to, during and after these events; with a view to identifying ways of reducing future harms.
In addition to this, Dr Ketelaar secured funding for a masters project through the annual President’s Award (2019). The project is co-supervised by Prof Catherine Comiskey (TCD), and the successful student, Eva Hunter, has now embarked on a cultural adaptation of an alcohol prevention program from the Dutch model known as PAS. The PAS program acheived significiant reductions in the early onset of drinking, and the hope is that well adapted materials could possibly acheive similar results in the Irish context. The process of culturally adapting and grounding the materials for use in the Irish context will hopefully develop into a full pilot program in due course.
