Technical expertise in Engineering at IT Sligo

Finola Howe, PEM Gateway Manager, IT Sligo

The PEM (Precision Engineering & Manufacturing) Technology Gateway was established in 2015 in IT Sligo. PEM works primarily with product development and manufacturing companies to provide engineering and process optimisation solutions across their product lifecycle, identifying projects that can add value to them.

The main benefits for a company collaborating with PEM is their technical expertise in engineering and manufacturing. More specifically in the areas of Advanced Material Synthesis and characterisation, Precision Engineering and Design, Manufacturing Process Modelling and Simulation and Advanced Process Monitoring and Control.

They work with companies to identify projects that are aligned with their technical expertise and help companies look for funding opportunities to help finance projects. They also provide help and guidance and have a great network of sister Gateways (15 centres in the Enterprise Ireland Technology Gateway Network nationwide)  to connect with depending on the type of expertise needed.

An example of the kind of collaboration they develop with companies is their work with ATA Air Tools. ATA manufactures and distributes pneumatic air tools to over 50 countries for major industries including the aerospace and automotive sectors. An initial Innovation Voucher project led to some important developments for ATA, such as the optimisation of a turbine design for a new air motor which proved invaluable in the design of that tool, and an introduction to the product development company Zenoz Ltd. This introduction, and the success of the components manufactured by Zenoz, has developed into a mutually beneficial and longstanding business arrangement for both ATA and Zenoz.

They are currently working with ATA on a new product development, working on design for manufacture (DFM) and also manufacturing prototypes of the new product.
