THEA welcomes the announcement today by Minister Simon Harris TD of extensions to research costs incurred by higher education institutions during the COVID-19 campus shutdowns.

This funding will greatly assist in the provision of costed extensions to research activities that are at risk because of delays incurred as a result of COVID-19.

In supporting contract researchers and research students, the Department is protecting Ireland’s national research and innovation system and Exchequer investments made to date.

Dr Jennifer Brennan, Director of Research, Development and Innovation with THEA stated:

“We acknowledge and welcome this affirmation of Ireland’s higher education research system at such a critical time in its evolution. As all Institutes of Technology are evolving to become Technological Universities, the research output per institution is greatly increasing. We are engaging with the new Department of Further an higher Education Research Innovation and Science in developing a new national research and innovation strategy, which will support the sector’s work into the future”.
