"We are delighted to welcome Professor Maggie Cusack as the first president of the Munster Technological University. Technological Universities are the most significant addition to the Irish higher education landscape. The inauguration of Ireland’s newest University will be an historic event in the south west as it becomes home to more than 18,000 students in six campuses across Cork and Kerry. Both CIT and IT Tralee have a proven record as engines of regional growth. They support national and regional enterprises and drive economic and academic achievement. Together, as a unitary multi-campus Technological University, it will have the scale and capacity to increase greatly research and innovation activity and enhance the relationships with industry. Professor Cusack’s experience and her successful career in academic leadership and research will bring a singular focus to the objective of unleashing the potential inherent within this fine institution and building capacity for the new Technological University. We also welcome the announcement of Mr Bob Savage as Chairperson of MTU from January 1, pending completion of the public process seeking expressions of interest in the role."
