THEA welcomes submission to Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Simon Harris of application to establish a new technological university in the Midlands and Mid-West from Athlone Institute of Technology and Limerick Institute of Technology. The application seeks the dissolution of both Institutes and the subsequent establishment of a new university.

Dr Joseph Ryan, Chief Executive of THEA stated: "We are delighted to congratulate our members, Athlone and Limerick Institutes of Technology, on successfully achieving this major milestone in their progress towards designation as a Technological University.  Technological Universities are the most significant addition to the Irish higher education landscape.  These two fine institutions have a proven record as engines of regional growth.   They support national and regional enterprises and drive economic and academic achievement.  Together, as a unitary multi-campus Technological University, it will have the scale and capacity to increase greatly research and innovation activity and enhance the relationships with industry.  We wish the governing bodies, presidents, and communities of both institutions the very best as they take this critical step toward realizing the ambition to create a Technological University that will bring huge benefit to the midlands and mid-west.”
