EziVein medical device: a solution for patients suffering from difficult vein access

EziVein is a medical aid designed to enhance the visibility of a vein to reduce the time and trauma for a blood draw or IV cannulation in the 35% of patients who suffer from DVA

EziVein medical device will alleviate anxiety and suffering for those patients who suffer from DVA – difficult vein access.

From January 1st, 2021, CIT and IT Tralee have been designated Munster Technological University.

This disposable device is affordable and user-friendly and requires no maintenance or mains power. It also allows for procedures to be carried out by a single staff member instead of two.

With a BSc in Industrial Product Design, Marie Casey, CEO & Founder of McAS Design Ltd went on to complete a higher diploma in health, safety and welfare at work followed by a master’s in public health at UCC, before working at the city’s Mercy University Hospital. While there, Marie came up with the idea for the EziVein device that would take her back to UCC as a participant in the IGNITE entrepreneurship Programme.

To bring the idea to reality Marie approached the Nimbus Technology Gateway at CIT.  The objective of the work undertaken by Nimbus was to design and develop a vein-detection device that utilises the transillumination approach to detect veins. The device is designed to be operated by trained medical personnel and to be universally applicable across all demographics. Some of its more novel features include; applicable for single-use, very low-cost materials, a new design for more effective usage.

The engagement with Nimbus has had significant impact for the company.  Partnership with hospitals and medically trained staff increases the adoption of this portable and cost-effective device. This can also be useful in training as well as help mitigate patient frustration in the process.

Marie spoke about the experience working with Nimbus on the development of EziVein; “My EziVein development with the Nimbus Technology Gateway has been a wonderful experience. The team have been enthusiastic and keen to deliver a high-quality solution from the word go. EziVein will now realise its first serious working prototype accompanied with relevant design and CAD material. EziVein used an Enterprise Ireland innovation voucher with Nimbus and got so much value from it. We will certainly work with Nimbus again. A big thanks to Juan and Andrew for their amazing efforts, constructive feedback and extensive knowledge.”

Nimbus is part of the Technology Gateway network and is funded by Enterprise Ireland in partnership with 11 Institutes of Technologies nationwide. It provides close-to-market technology solutions that allow companies to develop new products, processes and services by leveraging the research expertise available within each Institute of Technology.
